{"id":4193,"date":"2017-12-22T20:56:14","date_gmt":"2017-12-22T20:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.netspotapp.com\/help\/?p=4193"},"modified":"2025-07-28T13:52:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T13:52:16","slug":"how-to-perform-a-wifi-network-planning-survey-with-a-limited-number-of-wi-fi-routers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.netspotapp.com\/help\/how-to-perform-a-wifi-network-planning-survey-with-a-limited-number-of-wi-fi-routers\/","title":{"rendered":"How to perform a WiFi Network Planning survey using one physical router"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginning with version 3, NetSpot offers a fully functional  <a href=\"\/help\/how-to-perform-predictive-survey-with-netspot\/\">WiFi Planning mode<\/a> for when you need to plan an entirely new wireless network in a location that may have not even been built yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, sometimes there is a need to plan a network in an already existing space with an existing WiFi router that can be used to model multiple routers of the same brand and model for the most precise WiFi Planning survey reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So here is how to plan your WiFi network with as little as one portable router.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this type of Survey use a <a href=\"\/help\/how-do-i-start-my-survey\/\">regular Survey mode<\/a>, not the Planning one.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <b>Create New\u2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to start a new project. Name it and add an optional description. Choose to either draw or upload the floor plan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-792 img-responsive\"  title=\"Start WiFi survey\" src=\"\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/wifiHeatmapNewSurvey@2x.png\" alt=\"Start WiFi survey\" width=\"650\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After drawing or uploading a plan and calibrating it, set the data point precision. The larger and more open your surveyed space is, the less frequent sampling stops you need to take. The larger space with bigger object density will need more data points however for more precise heatmaps. Decide whether you\u2019ll be running Active scanning and which networks you are going to run it for. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-793 img-responsive\" title=\"NetSpot Active Scan\" src=\"\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/netspot-2-active-scan@2x.png\" alt=\"NetSpot Active Scan\" width=\"650\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Place your single router in its first presumed location, take a few samples, and then move with it to the next location of a data point. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-793 img-responsive\"  title=\"NetSpot completing\" src=\"\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/netspot-2-completing@2x.png\" alt=\"NetSpot completing\" width=\"650\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left: 30px; padding-left: 2em;list-style-type: none;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have measured the entire space, you can merge all snapshots into one as if you were working with an existing network that has all routers in place. The resulting snapshot is a good starting point for your analysis. You may want to move your testing AP to a different location based on the overall coverage you got, and merge another set of snapshots to see if new placement works better.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can merge any number of snapshots. Snapshots resulting from merging can be exported in reports, however they cannot be edited or merged with other snapshots. If you need to make changes, you\u2019ll need to edit original snapshots and then merge them again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To merge snapshots follow these steps: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click the currently active snapshot atop your canvas area for the full list of the created snapshots as well as the options available for them to drop down. Your first snapshot is created automatically when you perform your first scan. It is automatically named according to the date of creation, e.g. \u201c#1 Jun 8, 2025\u201d.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-793 img-responsive\"  title=\"Click the currently active snapshot\" src=\"\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Click_the_currently_active_snapshot@2x.png\" alt=\"Click the currently active snapshot\" width=\"650\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click Merge Snapshots to select the snapshots you\u2019d like to merge. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-793 img-responsive\"  title=\"Use the Merge option\" src=\"\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Merge_option@2x.png\" alt=\"Use the Merge option\" width=\"650\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By default the merged snapshot will have a name consisting of the next available number on the list, today&#8217;s date, and the word &#8220;merged&#8221;.).
